About
Indian Henry Campground is located along the Wild and Scenic Clackamas River in Mount Hood National Forest, nestled in a mixed forest of Douglas firs and evergreens at 1,249 feet elevation. The campground was severely damaged by the 2020 Riverside Fire, which burned over 100,000 acres in the Clackamas River Ranger District. The site remains closed as the Forest Service undertakes extensive recovery repairs and redesign work in partnership with landscape architects and the National Forest Foundation. Before the fire, Indian Henry served as a popular basecamp for river and wilderness recreation. The Clackamas River Trail, which began at the upper end of the campground, offered 8 miles of hiking and mountain biking through scenic forest. The river itself provided excellent fishing for winter steelhead, spring chinook, and late summer kokanee salmon, as well as whitewater rafting opportunities through the Cascade range. The campground is part of a larger redesign project that includes seven Upper Clackamas River campgrounds. The redesign aims to reconfigure and modernize the sites to meet growing demand while providing sustainable recreation opportunities and maintaining the natural, rustic character visitors expect. Fire recovery and redesign efforts continue, with the campground expected to remain closed until repairs and reconstruction are complete.
