About

Potato Patch Campground occupies a scenic spot at 7,200 feet on Mingus Mountain within Prescott National Forest, providing a cool retreat from Arizona's summer heat. The ponderosa pine setting offers a classic forest camping experience with views of interesting geology and abundant wildlife. Two camping loops accommodate different camping styles: Loop A contains 28 non-electric sites featuring level tent pads, picnic tables, elevated fire rings with grills, and 40-foot paved driveways; Loop B offers 12 sites with 30-amp electrical hookups but does not permit tent camping. Recreation opportunities abound in the surrounding area. Yeager Canyon Trail and Woodchute Trail provide access to the 5,923-acre Woodchute Wilderness with rewarding views from Woodchute Mountain. A segment of the Great Western Trail is accessible adjacent to the campground. Mingus Lake, directly across Highway 89A, is stocked for fishing. The Verde River in the valley below offers rafting, kayaking, and birding. The historic mining town of Jerome lies 8 miles down the winding mountain road, featuring unique shops, restaurants, and Jerome State Historic Park. Tuzigoot National Monument, Clarkdale, and Cottonwood are about 9 miles away with museums and services. Prescott and Prescott Valley are 20 miles distant.

Directions

From Prescott, take US Highway 89 north past Granite Dells, turn right on Highway 89A, and travel approximately 20 miles to the top of Mingus Mountain on a steep, mountainous grade. Potato Patch Campground entrance is on the left (across from Summit Picnic Area) on Forest Road 106. From Camp Verde, travel northwest on Highway 260 toward Cottonwood, turn left on Highway 89A, follow the paved winding mountain road through Jerome and up to the summit. The turnoff to Potato Patch is on the right, across from Summit Picnic Area. The road through Jerome is steep with tight hairpin turns and few pulloffs.
