About

Posey Lake Campground offers a forested retreat at 8,800 feet elevation in the Dixie National Forest, surrounded by towering ponderosa pines and aspen groves. The campground sits on a hillside above Posey Lake, providing easy access to fishing for rainbow and brook trout. Non-motorized boating is permitted, with a boat ramp and two fishing docks available. The campground contains 21 single-family sites and one group site accommodating up to 35 people. Each site includes a picnic table, fire ring with grill, and bear box for food storage. Vault toilets are located throughout the campground. Two hiking trails originate here: the mile-long Posey Overlook Trail leads to scenic views, while the Posey Spur Trail connects to the Great Western Trail for extended hiking, biking, and horseback riding. Posey Lake serves as a cool escape from the surrounding desert landscape and provides convenient access to Hell's Backbone Road, Utah Highway 12 (a National All-American Road), Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument, and Escalante Petrified Forest State Park. The 14-mile gravel access road includes steep sections, making vehicles over 30 feet inadvisable.

Directions

From Highway 12 in Escalante, turn north at 300 East at the elementary school following the Posey Lake/Hell's Backbone sign. Travel 14 miles to the junction of Forest Roads 153 and 154, keep left and continue 2 miles to Posey Lake Campground. The access road is gravel with some steep sections; vehicles over 30 feet are not recommended.
