About

Cowpuncher Guard Station sits in a secluded meadow at 8,000 feet elevation in the Dixie National Forest, surrounded by pine and aspen groves with slopes rising to 8,900 feet. Originally built as a Forest Service guard station, the cabin has been converted to a comfortable rental that sleeps up to 7 guests. Furnishings include bunk beds, one full-size bed, a wood cook stove, propane stovetop, kitchen sink with cold running water (summer and early fall only), and battery-operated lanterns. Pots, pans, dishes, and utensils are provided. A covered porch extends the living space with a picnic table and fire ring below. Pine Creek flows through the meadow offering excellent trout fishing. The Great Western Trail and other routes provide opportunities for hiking, mountain biking, and horseback riding directly from the cabin. Wildlife viewing is common in the surrounding forest. Access requires driving approximately 19 miles of dirt road from Escalante, including some steep sections. Roads typically close due to snow 5.5 miles from the cabin from late November through mid-April. Winter visitors must ski or snowmobile the final stretch. Firewood is provided, but guests must pack out all trash as there is no garbage service.

Directions

From Highway 12 in Escalante, travel north on 300 East for 14 miles to the Forest Roads 154/153 junction. Continue on FR 153 for 4.5 miles, then turn left on FR 145. Drive 0.7 miles to the gate, then 0.2 miles to the cabin. Access requires approximately 19 miles of dirt road with some steep sections.
