Cowpuncher Guard Station

Closed — The cabin is temporarily closed. Normal operating season is May 16 through November 30. Roads are typically closed by snow 5.5 miles from the cabin from late November to mid-April, requiring snowmobile or skis for winter access. Reservations operate on a 6-month rolling basis.

About

Cowpuncher Guard Station is a historic Forest Service cabin rental located in the Dixie National Forest, 20 miles northeast of Escalante in southern Utah. Situated at 8,000 feet elevation, the cabin sits in a secluded meadow surrounded by pine and aspen groves next to Pine Creek, a small trout stream open to public fishing. The cabin is comfortably furnished with bunk beds and one full-size bed, a table and chairs, wood cook stove, propane stovetop, and kitchen sink with cold running water during summer and early fall. Amenities include battery-operated lanterns, pots and pans, dishes and utensils, a covered porch with picnic table, fire ring, and provided firewood. A vault toilet is located 150 feet from the cabin. The cabin is accessed via the scenic Hells Backbone Road and is surrounded by trails including the Great Western Trail, offering abundant opportunities for hiking, mountain biking, and horseback riding. Pine Creek provides excellent trout fishing. The location serves as a cool escape from the surrounding desert landscape and makes an ideal base for exploring the Escalante area, including the Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument, Anasazi State Park, and Escalante Petrified Forest State Park. Posey Lake is located 7 miles away. Summer days are warm and nights are cool at this elevation.

Directions

From Highway 12 in Escalante, turn north on 300 East (Pine Lake/Hells Backbone Road). Drive 14 miles to the junction of Forest Roads 154 and 153. Continue on FR 153 for 4.5 miles. Turn left on FR 145 towards Cowpuncher and Blue Spruce Campground. Travel 0.7 miles to Cowpuncher Gate. The cabin is 0.2 miles past the gate.
