About
Blue Spruce Campground is a small, peaceful campground tucked along the banks of Pine Creek in a shaded blue spruce forest. With only 6 sites, this secluded spot offers a cool escape from the desert heat, with towering blue spruce trees providing privacy and creek access at every campsite. The campground sits at 7,871 feet elevation, about 20 miles north of Escalante via the scenic Hell's Backbone Road. The campground serves as an excellent basecamp for exploring the nearby Box-Death Hollow Wilderness Area, where only hiking is permitted. Additional trails throughout Dixie National Forest accommodate hiking, mountain biking, and horseback riding through aspen groves and spruce-fir forests. The Jubilee Trail, located a few miles north, leads to a historic early 1900s ranger cabin. This is a primitive, pack-it-in, pack-it-out campground with vault toilets and drinking water from faucets. Sites include picnic tables and fire rings. Access requires driving 18 miles on dirt forest roads from Escalante, with the final approach on FR 145. The remote location and rough access keep use moderate even during summer months.
Directions
From Escalante, turn north on 300 East. At 0.7 miles stay right at the fork. After 3.5 miles the road turns to dirt (FR 153). At 13.6 miles turn right following the sign to Hell's Backbone Bridge (FR 153). At 18 miles turn left on FR 145 to Blue Spruce Campground.
