About
Blue Spruce Campground sits at elevation along Pine Creek in a dense blue spruce forest, offering cool temperatures and ample shade during summer months. The campground has five single sites and one double site, all equipped with picnic tables and fire rings with grills. A vault toilet is available but campers must pack out all trash. The campground serves as a basecamp for exploring the Escalante backcountry. Several trails nearby are open to hiking, horseback riding, and mountain biking. The Box-Death Hollow Wilderness, where only foot travel is permitted, lies adjacent to the area. Fishing opportunities exist along Pine Creek. Access is via Forest Road 153 (Hells Backbone Road) and FR 145, approximately 18 miles north of Escalante. Street-legal OHVs are permitted in the campground, with ATVs allowed specifically at site 1. Bear-resistant food storage is required under forest order.
Directions
From Escalante, turn north on 300 East. At 0.7 miles the road forks; stay right. After 3.5 miles the road turns to dirt and becomes Forest Road 153. At 13.6 miles, turn right at the fork following signs to Hells Backbone Bridge (FR 153). At 18 miles turn left on FR 145 to Blue Spruce Campground.
