About

Payson Lakes Guard Station is a historic cabin rental facility located approximately 13 miles south of Payson, Utah, along the Mount Nebo Scenic Byway in the Uinta-Wasatch-Cache National Forest. Constructed by the Civilian Conservation Corps in 1935 as part of the New Deal Program, this guard station complex allows visitors to experience life similar to that of early Forest Rangers and their families. The facility sits at 8,000 feet elevation in a forest of aspen and Douglas fir trees. The complex consists of two buildings: a main cabin sleeping four and a bunkhouse sleeping four, for a maximum of 8 overnight guests. Up to 7 additional day-use visitors are permitted. The cabin includes flush toilets, a shower, electric heat, and electric appliances, but no potable water is available on-site. Guests must bring their own bedding, plates, utensils, cookware, and drinking water. An adjacent pasture can accommodate up to 8 horses. The location offers access to Payson Lakes (McClelland, Box, and Big East Lakes) for fishing, canoeing, and kayaking. Nearby trails provide opportunities for hiking, mountain biking, and equestrian use. Big East Lake features a day-use area with a swim beach, picnic tables, and a paved nature path. The adjacent Mount Nebo Wilderness Area offers pristine mountain scenery and extensive trail opportunities. Parking is limited to 5 family vehicles, which must remain on pavement. Pets are not allowed at the guard station. There is a 2-night minimum stay (3 nights on holidays) and a 7-night maximum stay.
