About

Oriental Campground sits at the end of a rough forest road along the Wild and Scenic North Fork John Day River in Oregon's Umatilla National Forest. This secluded 8-site campground offers a true backcountry experience with vault toilets but no potable water or garbage service. The setting along the river provides opportunities for fishing, swimming, and non-motorized boating, though water levels drop in mid to late summer. The campground serves as a basecamp for multiple recreational pursuits. Near Oriental Creek, the River Trail #3043 connects to over 100 miles of OHV trails. Three miles down the closed portion of Road 5506, hikers can access the North Fork John Day Wilderness via trails including the North Fork John Day River Trail #3022, Big Creek Trail #3151, and Corral Creek Trail #3009. The area is also popular for horseback riding, big game hunting, and wildlife photography. Access requires navigating Forest Road 55 for 13 miles from Highway 395, with the final stretch being rough and unsuitable for trailers, large vehicles, or low-clearance vehicles. Site 8 is available as a group site.

Directions

From Ukiah, OR, travel west 1 mile to the Hwy 395 junction. Turn left (south) on Hwy 395, travel south about 15 miles and turn left (east) onto Forest Service Road 55. Drive 13 miles east along the North Fork John Day River to Oriental Campground. The last few miles are very rough and not appropriate for trailers or low-clearance vehicles.
