About
Hilltop Hideaway sits at the historic Fremont Powerhouse site at approximately 5,000 feet elevation, overlooking the Umatilla National Forest near the North Fork John Day Wilderness. The cabin dates to the 1930s gold mining era when the Fremont Powerhouse was constructed in 1908 to provide cheaper power for local mines. The furnished cabin features one bedroom with a queen-over-queen bunkbed, a parlor with seating, and a kitchen equipped with refrigerator, electric stove/oven, microwave, coffee maker, toaster, cookware, and dishes. From June through September, the full bathroom has hot and cold running water with a tub/shower and flush toilet. October through May, there is no water or indoor plumbing; an outhouse is available and visitors must bring their own water. Nearby recreation includes hiking into the North Fork John Day Wilderness, mountain biking on forest roads, fishing at Olive Lake, huckleberry picking, and wildlife viewing. Three other rental cabins (Caretaker's Cabin, Congo Gulch, and Miner's Retreat) are located within a few hundred feet, making the area suitable for larger group gatherings.
