About
Big Creek Meadows Trailhead campground is a small, free camping area located just off the Blue Mountain Scenic Byway in Umatilla National Forest. Set in a riparian area adjacent to Big Creek, the campground features 3 sites that are increasingly popular with OHV recreationists and wilderness enthusiasts alike. The surrounding areas can remain quite wet well into June due to the riparian setting. The campground serves as a key trailhead into the North Fork John Day Wilderness, providing access to Big Creek Trail #3151 to the south. Nearby access to Tower Mountain Trail #3156 is available north of Forest Road 52. Three OHV trails connect into the campground: Tower Loop Trail #3040, Meadow Creek Trail #3193, and Christensen Trail #3185. The site offers ample parking for truck and stock trailers, making it ideal for horseback riding and backcountry trips. Attractions include wilderness hiking, hunting, fishing, and extensive OHV trail access. Huckleberries are abundant in the area in mid-August. The campground has an accessible vault toilet and picnic tables at all sites, but no potable water or garbage service, so visitors must pack out all trash. The location along the Blue Mountain Scenic Byway makes it a convenient base for exploring the roadside geology tour to Granite.
