About
Oil Creek State Park encompasses over 7,000 acres in northwestern Pennsylvania, preserving the landscape where the modern petroleum industry began in 1859 with Drake's Well. The park interprets historic oil boomtowns, abandoned wells, and early transportation infrastructure while offering a variety of recreational opportunities including hiking, biking, fishing, kayaking, and backcountry camping. The park's overnight facilities consist of two hike-in shelter areas along the Gerard Trail: Cow Run and Wolfkiel Run. Each area features six Adirondack-style shelters with fireplaces, tent sites, composting toilets, and seasonal water supply. These are true backcountry experiences requiring hikers to pack in their gear. Organized group tenting is available at Wildcat Hollow and behind the warming hut for groups up to 25 people. Oil Creek itself carves a valley of deep hollows, steep hillsides, and wetlands, creating excellent habitat for fishing and wildlife observation. The Oil Creek State Park Trail spans the valley floor and is popular with cyclists and hikers. Winter activities include cross-country skiing on designated trails.
