About

Cornplanter State Forest is named in honor of Chief Cornplanter, Native-American leader of the Seneca tribe, who maintained peace between the United States government and the Iroquois from 1784 to 1812. Today, the forest covers 1,585 acres in Forest, Crawford, and Warren Counties and is one of eight state forests in the PA Wilds region. The forest offers one designated roadside campsite at the Hunter Run Division, located along Jamison Run Road. Access to this site requires entering from Neiltown Road, as Jamison Run Road/Dawson Road is closed to vehicular traffic from other directions. The site is a pull-through configuration that can accommodate vehicles up to 60 feet, including tents, small RVs, or trailers. True to Pennsylvania State Forest camping, no developed facilities, modern conveniences, electric hookups, dump stations, or trash disposal facilities are available. The Cornplanter State Forest lies in the High Plateau and Northwestern Glaciated Plateau Ecoregions and features unique plant communities including a 99-acre old-growth hemlock-white pine forest in the Anders Run Natural Area. The forest offers 13.5 miles of hiking trails with opportunities for horseback riding and mountain biking on select trails. The area receives significant snowfall and is well known for cross-country skiing in winter months. Additional primitive backpack camping is permitted throughout most of the forest without a permit for single-night stays, following Leave No Trace principles and state forest regulations.
