About

Northrup Creek Horse Camp sits in a quiet corner of Clatsop State Forest, approximately 40 miles southeast of Astoria and 55 miles northwest of North Plains. Operated by the Oregon Department of Forestry, this campground was developed with support from the Oregon Equestrian Trails organization and opened in 2006. The facility offers 11 total campsites: eight specialized equestrian sites with horse trailer parking and corrals, and three tent sites for non-horse campers. Sites 1 through 5 require horses, sites 6 through 8 are open to both horse and RV campers, and sites 9 through 11 are designated for non-horse camping. The campground provides access to an extensive trail system including the Northrup Creek Loop and the Big Tree Trail, which showcases heritage grand fir trees dating back to the 1939 dedication of the Northrup Creek Forest Grassland. The trails are well-marked with branded cedar signboards and offer a mix of gentle to moderate terrain suitable for horseback riding, hiking, and mountain biking. The camp is accessed via paved Northrup Creek County Road off Highway 202 between Jewell and Mist. Reservations are available through ReserveAmerica and can be made up to six months in advance.

Directions

From Highway 202 at Milepost 35, turn north onto Northrup Creek County Road and travel four miles to the campground.
