About

North Mountain Hiker-Biker Campsite is one of many primitive campsites spaced every 5-7 miles along the 184.5-mile C&O Canal towpath, providing through-hikers and bikers a free overnight stop at mile marker 110. Located in Washington County near Clear Spring, Maryland, the site sits 1-5 miles from the nearest parking area and requires walking or cycling in. The campsite features a chemical toilet, picnic table, and fire ring. Non-potable well water is available from mid-April through mid-November; campers must filter, chemically treat, or boil water before drinking or cooking. From mid-November to mid-April, water is shut off entirely, so plan to carry all water during winter months. Fires are permitted only in the provided fire ring or grill, or in portable grills elevated off the ground. Firewood may be collected from dead material on the ground within the park but cannot be removed from the campground. This is a trash-free park, so all waste must be packed out. Pets are welcome but must remain leashed at all times. Quiet hours run from 10 p.m. to 6 a.m. The site is close to the Potomac River and may flood after heavy rains.
