About

Fort Frederick State Park Campground sits within a 585-acre historic park in Washington County, Maryland, where the centerpiece is the only stone fort constructed by a British colony during the French and Indian War. Built in 1756 under Governor Horatio Sharpe, the fort's stone walls and barracks have been restored to their 1758 appearance. The park borders the Potomac River and the Chesapeake and Ohio Canal National Historical Park passes directly through, providing campers with access to the towpath for hiking and biking. The campground features 29 non-electric family campsites with stone dust camping pads, picnic tables, fire rings, and lantern posts. Portable toilets serve the campground area seasonally, while a comfort station with flush toilets and rinse-off stations is located near the fort parking lot. Potable water is not available within the campground itself but can be found approximately 3/5 mile away near the railroad tracks, where a dumpster is also located for trash disposal. The park store at Captain Worts Store offers supplies Thursday through Monday. Tent camping operates from the first Saturday in May through the first Sunday in November. Self-contained RV units may camp year-round, with driveway lengths ranging from 30 to 50 feet across various sites. Four youth group campsites are available seasonally for organized groups with a Maryland DNR Youth Group Pass. The park hosts interpretive events, living history programs, guided tours, and access to hiking trails, fishing, and a 22-mile paved bike trail.
