Namekagon District

Open — Open year-round, first-come, first-served. No reservations or permits required. Winter access may be limited by snow and ice conditions, with rivers typically freezing by early December.

About

Namekagon District encompasses 67 primitive campsites located along the Namekagon and St. Croix Rivers within the St. Croix National Scenic Riverway. These water-access-only sites span a 100-mile corridor from Namekagon Dam to the confluence and from Gordon Dam to Riverside Landing. Each designated campsite is identified by a square brown sign with a tent symbol at the river's edge, typically near the take-out or beach area. These are true primitive sites operating under Leave No Trace principles. Each site includes a metal fire ring, and most have picnic tables. Vault toilets are located near campsites, but campers must bring their own toilet paper. No drinking water is available. Individual sites accommodate up to 8 people and 3 tents, while group sites can accommodate up to 10 people and 6 tents. A three-night limit applies, and all sites must be occupied on the first night. The riverway is accessible year-round, though conditions vary dramatically by season. Winter can bring temperatures below zero with rivers freezing by early December, while summer offers warm, humid conditions ideal for paddling. The area experiences increased bear activity, particularly along the Namekagon River. Camping is completely free with no permits or reservations required.
