About
Goulding Lake Cabin sits on the northwest shore of Otter Lake within the West Chichagof-Yakobi Wilderness Area on the western edge of Chichagof Island. The 16' x 16' rustic A-frame features a sleeping loft accessed by vertical ladder, plywood bunks for up to 8 people, a wood stove for heat, table with benches, and a cooking counter. The cabin is located in a flat, lightly wooded area surrounded by terrain that varies from open muskegs to densely forested steep slopes. Visitors can explore Otter Lake and Goulding Lake to the east, which are connected. No boat is provided, so guests should bring a packraft or inflatable watercraft. Fishing opportunities include cutthroat trout year-round below the falls and in the lower lake west of the cabin, Dolly Varden year-round, and seasonal steelhead and coho. Brown bears frequent the area, so proper precautions are essential. Access is by floatplane only, weather permitting, about 50 minutes from Sitka or Juneau. The remote location offers wilderness solitude with opportunities to explore nearby lakes and high alpine meadows. Visitors must bring all amenities including sleeping bags, sleeping pads, cooking stove, fire starter, lantern, cookware, utensils, food, toilet paper, and garbage bags. Rubber boots and raingear are recommended.
