About
Eight Fathom Cabin is a remote USFS rental cabin situated on the north shore of Eight Fathom Bight at the head of Port Frederick in the Tongass National Forest. Built in 2009, this 15x17-foot milled cedar log structure accommodates up to 8 people with wooden bunks, a full sleeping loft, table, and benches. The cabin is heated by a wood burning stove; visitors must bring seasoned dry firewood as none is supplied on-site. Access is exclusively by boat or floatplane. From Hoonah, the boat ride takes approximately 45 minutes. By floatplane, expect a 30-minute flight from Juneau or under 10 minutes from Hoonah. A marine mooring buoy sits directly in front of the cabin, and a fine gravel beach is suitable for landing small boats. The Eight Fathom Marine Access Facility float dock is located within half a mile. This is a primitive cabin with no electricity, indoor plumbing, potable water, or cell phone coverage. Visitors must pack in all supplies including sleeping bags, cook stoves, cooking gear, food, toilet paper, and flashlights, and pack out all trash. The beach access trail, first-level floor, outside deck, and outhouse are ADA accessible. The area offers excellent wildlife viewing opportunities including whales, brown bears, deer, and shorebirds, plus access to freshwater and saltwater fishing and hunting areas. Neka Hot Springs is located 9 miles from the cabin.
