About
Eight Fathom Cabin sits on the north shore of Eight Fathom Bight in the protected waters of Port Frederick, 15 miles southwest of Hoonah, Alaska. Built in 2009, this 15'x17' milled log cabin can accommodate up to 8 people with wooden bunks, a full sleeping loft, table, and benches. The cabin is notable for its ADA accessibility, with a barrier-free 125-foot trail from the beach, an accessible first-level floor, outdoor deck, and toilet. The cabin is accessible only by float plane (30 minutes from Juneau, under 10 minutes from Hoonah) or boat (45 minutes from Hoonah). A marine mooring buoy sits directly in front of the cabin, and a fine gravel beach allows for landing and launching small boats. The cabin is located at the south end of the isolated Eight Fathom Forest road system, within half a mile of the Eight Fathom Marine Access Facility float dock. Port Frederick and Eight Fathom Bight offer exceptional opportunities for wildlife viewing, including whales, brown bears, deer, shorebirds, and various small mammals. The area provides excellent access to hunting, freshwater fishing, and saltwater fishing. Neka Hot Springs is located 9 miles from the cabin via Forest road 8580. This is a primitive facility with no electricity, plumbing, or cell phone coverage. The cabin is heated with a woodstove and firewood is provided. Guests must bring sleeping bags, pads, cook stoves, cooking gear, and food, and pack out all trash.
