About
Appleton Cove Cabin sits on the flat shoreline of Appleton Cove amid tall, dense hemlock-spruce forest on Baranof Island, with views of surrounding hills and mountains. Originally built in 1992 by Forest Service crews for field housing during logging operations, the cabin became available for recreation after logging ceased. The one-room cabin features three single-wide bunks, one double-wide bunk, a table with benches, cooking counter, and an oil stove for heating. Visitors must be fully self-sufficient. The cabin has no electricity, no potable water, and no mattresses. Water is available from a stream behind the cabin but must be treated. Guests need to bring sleeping bags, cooking gear, food, toilet paper, #1 diesel fuel for the oil stove, a lantern, garbage bags, and fire extinguisher. A pit toilet is located on site. The area offers excellent recreational opportunities including saltwater fishing for Dolly Varden, pink, chum, and coho salmon. Seasonal deer hunting, hiking, mountain biking, and marine wildlife viewing are also popular activities. A system of isolated logging roads near the cabin allows for hiking and OHV riding, though these roads are not connected directly to the cabin.
