About

Long Bay Shelter is a primitive three-sided Adirondack survival shelter nestled in a stand of tall trees along the shoreline of a small bay south of Long Bay on Chichagof Island. The shelter provides basic overnight accommodations for backcountry travelers exploring the remote waters of Tenakee Inlet in the Tongass National Forest. The shelter is equipped with a wood stove for heating, plywood sleeping bunks, and a small food preparation table. Visitors must be entirely self-sufficient as there is no potable water, restroom facilities, or firewood provided. All supplies including drinking water and stove fuel must be packed in, and all waste must be packed out. Access to Long Bay Shelter is by boat only. The shelter sits on the south side of Tenakee Inlet, approximately 14 miles west of the small community of Tenakee Springs and about 26 miles west of Chatham Strait. The surrounding waters offer opportunities for both motorized and non-motorized boating.
