Monte Cristo Campground is the highest-elevation campground in the Ogden Ranger District at 9,000 feet, located 30 miles east of Huntsville, Utah on Highway 39. The campground offers approximately 47 standard nonelectric single-family sites plus two group sites that can accommodate up to 100 people each. Each site includes a picnic table, grill, campfire circle, and cement pad. Both flush and vault toilets are available throughout the facility. The campground is nestled in a forest of shady aspen and spruce trees. Summer brings abundant wildflowers, while autumn delivers a spectacular display of golden aspen leaves. Sugar Pine Creek flows nearby. The scenic drive along Highway 39 is popular with motorcyclists and road cyclists. Monte Cristo serves as a basecamp for extensive trail networks offering hiking, mountain biking, horseback riding, and off-road vehicle opportunities. Horses and ATVs must be kept outside the campground proper but are permitted at dispersed sites north of the property. During hunting season, some sites remain open for hunters. Bear activity requires proper food storage; violations can result in fines up to $5,000.

Directions

From Ogden, Utah, take 12th Street up Ogden Canyon and continue on Highway 39 east of Huntsville for 30 miles. The campground is located across the highway from the Monte Cristo Guard Station.
