Monte Cristo

Closed — Closed for the winter season. Highway 39 is closed between milepost 37 near Ant Flat Road and milepost 56 near Woodruff, typically from late November through mid-May. The highway and campground typically reopen in mid-May depending on snow conditions.

About

Monte Cristo Campground is situated at 9,000 feet elevation in the Uinta-Wasatch-Cache National Forest, 30 miles east of Huntsville, Utah. The campground sits in a beautiful high mountain area covered by aspen and spruce forests, with Sugar Pine Creek nearby. Summer wildflowers are plentiful throughout the meadows, and autumn brings spectacular fall colors. The area offers extensive recreational opportunities including hiking, mountain biking, horseback riding, and off-road vehicle trails. The scenic drive along Highway 39, part of the Ogden River Scenic Byway, is popular with motorcyclists and road bicyclists. The byway winds 44 miles through Utah's mountain country, following the Ogden River past Pineview Reservoir and into the high country. The campground includes standard campsites as well as two group sites that can accommodate up to 100 people each. Reservations are available through Recreation.gov. Access requires traveling Highway 39 through Ogden Canyon and past Pineview Reservoir.

Directions

From Ogden, take 12th Street up Ogden Canyon and continue east on Highway 39 for 30 miles past Huntsville. The campground is located across the highway from the Monte Cristo Guard Station. Note: Vehicles with combined length greater than 50 feet are not permitted in Ogden Canyon; use alternate route via Weber Canyon (I-84) and Trappers Loop (SR-167).
