About
Mammoth Springs Campground is a small, intimate Forest Service campground nestled in the Idaho Panhandle National Forests within Shoshone County. This recently improved facility features 8 camp units and operates on a first-come, first-served basis, making it an ideal destination for those seeking a quieter, more remote camping experience away from busier developed campgrounds. The campground was enhanced through a grant from the Idaho Department of Parks and Recreation, improving the overall camping infrastructure. Amenities include vault toilets and seasonal drinking water available from a hand pump during peak season (July through September). The facility operates under a Pack it In Pack it Out refuse policy, so campers must be prepared to take all trash with them. Located in the St. Joe River region, the campground provides access to Dismal Lake, situated approximately 1 mile from the campground on private timber ground. Access requires traveling on Forest Highway 50 from Avery, Idaho, then navigating a series of forest roads including Bluff Creek Road and Avery Timber Creek Road, making this a destination suited for those comfortable with remote forest road travel.
Directions
From Avery, Idaho drive 22 miles east on St. Joe River Road (Forest Highway 50), turn south on Bluff Creek Road (509), go 14 miles and turn south 2.5 miles on Avery Timber Creek Road (201). Proceed 2.4 miles to the campground entrance. Alternative access from St. Regis, Montana via Little Joe Road (282) to Gold Creek Road (388) to St. Joe River Road.
