Lewis Lake Campground is located at 7,800 feet elevation on the southeast shore of Lewis Lake in the southern section of Yellowstone National Park, approximately eight miles north of the South Entrance on the road to West Thumb. The campground is densely forested with lodgepole pine, providing shaded sites with good privacy between them. All 85 sites are reservable through Recreation.gov, with 80% of sites bookable six months in advance and 20% available two weeks ahead. Each site includes a picnic table and fire ring with grate, plus shared bear-proof food storage lockers. The campground offers direct access to Lewis Lake, one of Yellowstone's large high-elevation freshwater lakes that allows both motorized and non-motorized boats. A boat ramp is located near the campground registration area. Boaters must obtain permits and pass an aquatic invasive species inspection by park staff before launching. The lake is popular for fishing, with permits available at the South Entrance or campground office. Nearby attractions include Lewis Falls and Lewis Canyon overlook, and the campground provides access to backcountry camping trails. Lewis Lake operates as one of the last Yellowstone campgrounds to fill during the season, making it relatively easy to secure a site during shoulder seasons. The high elevation means cooler temperatures and the possibility of snow even during summer months. Total vehicle length is limited to 25 feet. Generators are not permitted at this campground. Campsite occupancy is limited to six people per site, with stays limited to 14 days from July 1 through Labor Day and 30 days the rest of the operating season.
