This campground was surrounded by the Rodeo-Chediski fire in the summer of 2002. The area around the campground was severely burned and presents safety hazards, including stump holes and falling limbs and trees. The campground is still forested and trees within the facility have been sprayed with pesticide to help protect against bark beetles. About

Lewis Canyon Group Campground is a large single-group facility nestled in the White Mountains of eastern Arizona, within the Sitgreaves National Forest. The campground sits at approximately 6,600 feet elevation in a beautiful ponderosa pine setting with a large open field nearby. Wildlife including turkey, elk, and mule deer are frequently spotted in the area. The facility is designed for family gatherings and large groups, accommodating up to 150 guests at a single reservable site. Amenities include vault toilets, picnic tables, campfire rings, and standing camp grills. Note that potable water is not available on-site; campers can obtain water at the Forest Service work center in Pinedale. A camp host is present during the operating season. Recreation opportunities abound, including a horseshoe pit, baseball field, and access to the extensive White Mountain Trail System for hiking and mountain biking. Numerous Forest Service roads nearby accommodate OHV enthusiasts. Summer temperatures are pleasant due to the elevation, though the monsoon season from late June through August often brings afternoon thunderstorms. The area was impacted by the 2002 Rodeo-Chediski fire, and some hazards from burned trees and stump holes may still be present.
