About
Black Canyon Rim Campground sits among towering ponderosa pines in the Apache-Sitgreaves National Forest at 7,600 feet elevation. This 20-site developed campground offers a peaceful forest setting on relatively flat, sandy terrain. The campground is a favorite stopping point for travelers on the General Crook National Recreation Trail and provides convenient access to outdoor recreation. Black Canyon Lake, located approximately 2.5 miles northeast, offers fishing and boating opportunities with electric motors only. A herd of wild horses is frequently seen running through the area and stopping at the lake for water. The region is also home to deer, elk, and occasionally black bears. Within walking distance of the campground is the historic grave site of Stott, Scott, and Wilson, three young men lynched during the Pleasant Valley War. The campground accommodates a variety of camping setups. All 20 sites can handle tents and pop-up campers, while some sites are suitable for pull trailers, fifth-wheel trailers, and motorhomes up to 40 feet. Access is via sand and gravel forest roads. A campground host is available on-site during the operating season. Gas, phone, and groceries are available 8 miles west at Forest Lakes or 13 miles east at Heber.
Directions
Located 13 miles west of Heber, Arizona. From Forest Lakes, travel east on Highway 260 for approximately 1 mile. Turn south on Rim Road (Forest Road 300) and travel approximately 2.4 miles. The campground is at the intersection of Rim Road and Black Canyon Road (Forest Road 86).
