About

Gentry Campground is a small, peaceful campground nestled among towering ponderosa pines interspersed with fir and oak at the base of Gentry Fire Lookout Tower in the Apache-Sitgreaves National Forest. At 7,725 feet elevation, this campground offers a relatively flat camping area with sandy surfaces and gravel access roads. The campground features 5 individual family campsites that can be used on a first-come, first-served basis, or the entire campground can be reserved as a group site accommodating up to 75 people. The campground's location within the Heber Wild Horse Territory is a special feature, as visitors frequently encounter herds of free-roaming horses that frequent the area. The surrounding ponderosa pine forest provides excellent opportunities for hiking, wildlife viewing, and photography. The area receives light use, offering a quiet camping experience away from crowds. Campers should come prepared as the campground has minimal amenities. There is no potable water available, so visitors must bring their own drinking water supply. A vault toilet is provided for restroom facilities. Each site includes a picnic table and campfire grill. A campground host and trash deposit are available at nearby Black Canyon Rim campground. Gas and groceries can be found 10.5 miles west at Forest Lakes. Visitors should stay away from the lookout tower during lightning storms.

Directions

From Heber, travel 13 miles east on State Highway 260 to the junction with Forest Road 300. Turn south on Forest Road 300 and continue approximately 5 miles, following signs to Gentry Lookout Tower.
