Kendesnii Campground
Open — Open year-round on a first-come, first-served basis. The Nabesna Road is not plowed in winter, so campsites may be inaccessible due to snow from late September through April. Heavy rain or snow at any time can make the road impassable. Seven-day camping limit per month.
Lakina River Update
A recently observed landslide across the Lakina River is creating a debris hazard on a popular packrafting route. The river water is cutting its way through, but is highly dynamic and should be expected to remain that way through the boating season.
About
Located at 3,000 feet elevation on the Nabesna Road, Kendesnii Campground is the only developed National Park Service campground in Wrangell-St. Elias National Park. This free camping area features 10 designated sites, each equipped with a picnic table and fire ring, plus two vault toilets serving the campground. The sites can accommodate small to medium RVs up to 25 feet in length. The campground operates year-round on a first-come, first-served basis with no reservations required or accepted. However, winter access is limited as the road is not plowed, making campsites potentially inaccessible during snow season. Summer visitors with regular passenger cars can typically reach the campground, though heavy rain or snow at any time of year may make the dirt and gravel road impassable. The campground enforces a seven-day camping limit per month, and sites cannot be left unattended for more than 24 hours. Visitors should note that no potable water is available at the campground; the nearest drinking water is at the Wrangell-St. Elias Visitor Center or Slana Ranger Station. All food and scented items must be stored in hard-sided vehicles at all times when not in immediate use due to wildlife. The campground provides access to hiking trails and fishing opportunities in the surrounding wilderness.
Directions
Located at Mile 27.8 of the Nabesna Road. The Nabesna Road starts at Mile 60 of the Tok Cutoff Highway in Slana, Alaska. The dirt and gravel road is maintained by the State of Alaska. Regular passenger cars can make the journey in summer, but the road may be impassable due to heavy rain or snow.
