About

Nestled in the Chugach Mountains along the Copper River, Childs Glacier Recreation Area and Campground offers 11 maintained campsites with spectacular views of Childs Glacier and the historic Million Dollar Bridge. The campground sits about 300 feet from the wide, glacier-fed Copper River, surrounded by tall cottonwoods with an understory of alder, willow, devil's club and fern. The campground was once accessible by road from Cordova, but the dynamic Copper River washed out sections of the highway at mile 36 in 2011 and mile 44 in 2018. Access now requires boat or air transportation arranged through local outfitters such as Childs Glacier Lodge. Despite the remote access, the site remains a premier destination for those seeking an authentic Alaska wilderness experience. Recreational opportunities include salmon fishing in the Copper River, wildlife watching for moose and both grizzly and black bears, and hiking the on-site Copper River Trail that connects to the Million Dollar Bridge, or the Childs Glacier North Trail that leads to the glacier face. The historic Million Dollar Bridge, constructed in 1910 to transport copper from Kennicott to Cordova, adds historical significance to this remarkable location.

Directions

From Cordova, the campground is located 48 miles east on the Copper River Highway just before the Million Dollar Bridge. Highway sections at mile 36 and mile 44 are washed out. Access requires boat or air transportation arranged through local outfitters.
