About

Childs Glacier Recreation Area and Campground sits 300 feet from the Copper River in the Chugach Mountains, offering front-row views of one of Alaska's most active calving glaciers. The 11 tent-only campsites are nestled among cottonwoods with an understory of alder, willow, and devil's club. A large covered viewing platform and pavilion provide shelter for watching icebergs break from the glacier face. The Copper River Highway once connected the campground to Cordova 48 miles to the west, but washouts at mile 36 (2011) and mile 44 (2018) severed road access permanently. Visitors now arrange transport through Cordova-based outfitters offering boat or floatplane service. Despite the access challenge, the campground rewards those who make the journey with salmon fishing, bear viewing, and two hiking trails: Copper River Trail to the Million Dollar Bridge and Childs Glacier North Trail to the glacier face. Facilities are basic: vault toilets, picnic tables, and a self-serve fee station. Water availability is inconsistent; some sources indicate a hand pump while others report no potable water, so plan to bring your own. All trash must be packed out.

Directions

From Cordova, the campground is 48 miles east on the Copper River Highway just before the Million Dollar Bridge. Road access is no longer possible due to washouts at mile 36 and mile 44. Arrange transport through Cordova-based outfitters offering boat rides or bush plane flights.
