About
West Fork Campground is a Bureau of Land Management campground situated at milepost 49 on the Taylor Highway in remote interior Alaska. The campground features 25 sites arranged in two loops: an east loop with 7 pull-through spaces and a west loop with 18 back-in spaces, all on compacted gravel surfaces. Each site includes a picnic table and fire ring with grill attachment. Four accessible vault toilets serve the campground, and potable water is hauled to a centralized location during summer months. The campground provides access to the Fortymile Wild and Scenic River system. A quarter mile north of the campground, parking and river access lead to the West Fork of the Dennison Fork, though boats must be carried about 20 yards to the water. Except during spring runoff, this section is typically too shallow for comfortable canoeing or rafting. The large loop features an overlook and shade structure where visitors can observe trumpeter swans and moose on a small oxbow lake. Payment is made via an iron ranger fee box at the entrance or through the Recreation.gov Scan & Pay app, which must be downloaded before arrival due to lack of cell reception. A camp host is typically on-site until mid-to-late August. The campground fills most nights during mid-September, primarily with RV and fifth-wheel campers.
