About
Softuk Bar Cabin offers a unique remote lodging experience in the Chugach National Forest. This 12x14-foot rustic cabin sits adjacent to a long sandy beach on the Gulf of Alaska, 45 miles southeast of Cordova. The cabin can accommodate up to six people on wooden bunkbeds without mattresses and is furnished with a table, wood stove, oil stove, axe, splitting maul, saw, rainwater catchment barrel, and an outdoor pit toilet. The cabin has no running water or electricity, so visitors must bring their own supplies including food, water, #1 stove oil, firewood, sleeping gear, cooking equipment, and lighting. The surrounding area is characterized by alder and spruce forest with glacier-capped peaks visible in the distance. Wildlife is abundant, including waterfowl, moose, Sitka black-tailed deer, and both brown and black bears. The sandy beach is excellent for springtime beachcombing, yielding Japanese fishing floats, shells, and other treasures after winter storms. Activities include razor clam digging, wild strawberry picking, hunting during extended spring and fall bear seasons and late summer through fall deer seasons, and fishing for a small run of coho salmon in the lagoon behind the cabin. The historic townsite of Katalla, where Alaska's first oil well was drilled in 1902, is located about 4 miles east. Access is strictly by wheel plane landing on the beach at low tide only, typically a 25-minute flight from Cordova. Due to the extreme remoteness and wilderness conditions, visitors must be prepared for bear encounters, changing weather, and potential extended stays due to poor flying conditions. Paralytic shellfish poisoning has been detected in the area, so check current regulations before harvesting shellfish. Maximum stay is seven consecutive days.
Directions
Access is by wheel plane only, landing on the beach at low tide. Typically a 25-minute flight from Cordova. Check local tide tables before planning travel. Refer to USGS topographic map Cordova A-2.
