About
Squirrel Creek State Recreation Site is a 160-acre park located at Mile 79.5 of the Richardson Highway in Alaska's Copper Valley, approximately 35.5 miles south of Glennallen. The campground offers 25 spacious sites suitable for both tents and RVs of any length, with each site featuring a fire ring. Vault toilets and drinking water are provided on-site. The recreation site borders Squirrel Creek, the Tonsina River, and a small lake known as Squirrel Creek Pit, offering excellent opportunities for fishing grayling and rainbow trout. The surrounding spruce forest creates a quiet, scenic camping experience with ample opportunities for wildlife viewing and birdwatching. Campers should bring their own firewood as it is not provided. The campground is managed by Tonsina Lodge under permit from Alaska State Parks. Maximum camping stay is 15 consecutive days. Nearby Glennallen (30 minutes north) provides access to Wrangell-St. Elias National Park, while Copper Center (10 minutes south) offers additional fishing on the Klutina River.
