About
Allan Point Cabin sits at the edge of a tall, dense hemlock-spruce forest on Halleck Island in upper Nakwasina Sound, about 16 miles north of Sitka in the Tongass National Forest. The two-story Pan Abode style cabin was built in 1993 by volunteers and overlooks Nakwasina Sound to the south, providing an excellent base for saltwater fishing and deer hunting. The main level includes a single-wide bunk, table, benches, cooking counter, oil stove, front and back entrances, and a large front deck. A stairway leads to the second level with an open sleeping loft containing two double-wide bunks and outside balconies to the front and back. The cabin officially sleeps 5 but can accommodate additional people on the floor or balconies in good weather. Water is available from a small stream 200 feet west of the cabin. The site is accessible only by float plane or boat from Sitka, weather permitting. Float plane travel takes approximately 10 minutes, while boat travel takes about 30 minutes. Access can only occur at certain stages of the tide. Boat operators should use charts to locate dangerous rocks toward the east side of the bay when approaching the cabin. Brown bear frequent the area. The cabin area is part of a landscape that includes early 1960s harvest areas, creating a mosaic of alder-dominated second growth with spruce and hemlock understory.
