About

Johnson's Shut-Ins State Park Campground sits within one of Missouri's most geologically significant landscapes, where billion-year-old igneous rock creates the famous shut-ins water features along the East Fork of the Black River. The campground spans five distinct loops: Loop 1 serves equestrian campers with electric/water hookups and access to riding trails; Loop 2 offers premium sewer/electric/water sites near camper cabins and the camp store; Loop 3 provides electric sites with convenient access to laundry and showers; Loop 4 contains basic tent sites; and Loop 5 features 14 walk-in tent platforms in a more secluded setting. Facilities throughout the campground are well-maintained, with modern restrooms and showerhouses in Loops 2 and 3 remaining open year-round. Each loop includes picnic shelters, and the central camp store stocks essentials. ADA-accessible sites are available in every loop, and the park's Black River Center offers interpretive exhibits about the region's natural history. During summer months, the shut-ins swimming area draws crowds, so weekday camping offers a quieter experience. The campground operates year-round with reservations available up to 12 months in advance through Missouri State Parks' online system. Water availability is limited during the off-season from November through March, so campers should plan accordingly. Firewood must comply with current advisories to prevent pest spread, and pets are welcome with a two-dog maximum per site.
