About
Johnson's Shut-Ins State Park Campground provides diverse camping options across five loops in the scenic St. Francois Mountains of Missouri. The campground accommodates tent campers, RVers, and equestrians with walk-in sites, basic sites, electric sites, 50-amp electric sites, and full-hookup sites offering sewer/electric/water. Loop 5 features 14 walk-in tent sites on wooden platforms requiring straps or cords to secure tents, with designated parking in separate lots. Loop 1 is designated for equestrian camping year-round but also accepts non-equestrian campers. The campground offers convenient amenities including a centrally located camp store and multiple showerhouses. During the off-season from November through March, potable water remains available at frost-free spigots, and restrooms in Loop 3 and near the Loop 2 camper cabins stay open year-round. A special-use camping area is available near Loop 5, and utility carts help transport equipment to walk-in sites. The park's signature attraction, the shut-ins, features ancient volcanic rock formations where the East Fork Black River has carved natural water slides and pools. Visitors enjoy swimming, hiking, fishing for smallmouth bass, rock climbing, rappelling, picnicking, and exploring over 130 species of birds. The park's wilderness character and unique geology make it one of Missouri's most distinctive camping destinations.
