Johnson's Shut-Ins State Park
Overview
Johnson's Shut-Ins State Park is a 9,432-acre gem in Missouri's rugged St. Francois Mountains along the East Fork Black River in Reynolds County. The park is currently open and fully operational, offering its signature shut-ins—ancient volcanic rock formations where the river creates natural water slides, chutes, and swimming holes through narrow canyon-like gorges. The park features extensive camping options (walk-in, basic, electric, full hookup, and equestrian sites), modern cabins with full amenities, hiking and backpacking trails, fishing for smallmouth bass, rock climbing/rappelling with permits, and equestrian trails. The park famously hosts about 40% of Missouri's plant species (over 850 types) and is jointly administered with Taum Sauk Mountain State Park. Notably, the park was devastated by a catastrophic dam failure in December 2005 when 1.3 billion gallons burst from the Taum Sauk reservoir, but it has been meticulously rebuilt and fully reopened since 2010, including a "Scour Trail" that interprets the historic flood. Access to the shut-ins includes a boardwalk with overlooks, changing facilities, and two park stores. No current closures or advisories are in effect. River levels and weather should be checked before visiting for optimal shut-ins experience.
