About

Hazel Creek Campground is a primitive, first-come, first-served facility located in a remote area of Mark Twain National Forest without cell phone service. This campground is particularly popular with OHV/ATV riders, equestrians, and mountain bikers seeking an undeveloped camping experience in the Ozarks. The campground offers 10 individual campsites, each equipped with a parking spur, fire ring, picnic table, and lantern post, but no drinking water, toilets, or regular mowing services are provided. The campground serves as a key access point for the Ozark Trail, with a trailhead located on the road leading into the campground. The Courtois Creek and Trace Creek sections of the Ozark Trail are accessible from here, offering approximately 24 to 45 miles of multi-use trails open to foot traffic, mountain bikes, and equestrians. The area is rich in history, being part of the Old Lead Belt where much of the nation's lead ore was once mined. A historic lead smelter foundation remains on site with interpretive signage. The Trail of Tears National Historic Trail also passes through this location. Hazel Creek itself is suitable for watering horses, and hitching posts are provided for equestrians. Some parking spurs are large enough to accommodate horse trailers.
