About

Marble Creek Recreation Area lies deep in the St. Francois Mountains of Mark Twain National Forest, about 20 minutes from the nearest town. The creek that gives the campground its name runs for 20 miles through the forest, its bed lined with colorful dolomite once mined as Taum Sauk Marble. Remains of a grist mill that operated until 1935 are still visible nearby. The fast-moving water, punctuated by large rocks and small pools, draws swimmers in summer and anglers year-round targeting smallmouth bass and panfish. The campground loop offers 25 single sites and one double site arranged on both sides of the road. Six sites sit directly creekside at the bottom of the hill; the others perch above with paths leading down to the water. Every site has a picnic table, fire ring, and lantern post. Two centrally located vault toilet buildings serve campers and hikers. There is no potable water; the adjacent stream is year-round but must be treated before drinking. Trash service runs during the open season only. Marble Creek is the primary trailhead for the Marble Creek/Crane Lake Section of the Ozark Trail, a roughly 21-mile out-and-back route to Crane Lake Picnic Area. Horses are permitted at the trailhead parking area but not in the campground proper. The remote setting means no cell coverage, making this a true escape for those seeking quiet forest solitude.
