About

Battle of Pilot Knob State Historic Site preserves the location of one of the largest Civil War battles fought in Missouri. On September 27, 1864, approximately 12,000 Confederate troops under General Sterling Price attacked Fort Davidson, defended by just 1,500 Union soldiers. The hexagonal earthwork fort still stands today alongside interpretive stations that guide visitors across the battlefield. The day-use picnic area occupies a pine forest planted in the 1960s near the visitor center. Four group shelters are available for reservation: Shelter 1 is the largest, seating 35 with a group grill and electrical outlet; Shelters 2, 3, and 4 each accommodate 20 people. All shelters connect via paved ADA-accessible pathways and have water, electricity, and modern restrooms nearby. A playground with themed children's fort adds to the family-friendly atmosphere. The visitor center features museum exhibits, a 22-minute audiovisual presentation, and an automated fiber-optic battle map. The 0.5-mile asphalted Brogans Trail offers a gentle walk with exercise stations. Shelter reservations run $40/day for the large shelter or $150 for all four, bookable online 30 days to 12 months in advance.
