About

Battle of Pilot Knob State Historic Site preserves the location of one of the largest Civil War battles fought on Missouri soil in September 1864. Today, the historic site in the scenic Arcadia Valley of Iron County offers day-use recreation facilities including four reservable picnic shelters, a visitor center and museum, playground, and interpretive trail. The picnic area features covered shelters suitable for groups of various sizes. Shelter 1, the largest, can accommodate up to 35 people and includes a group grill and electrical outlet. Shelters 2, 3, and 4 each seat up to 20 people. All shelters are accessible via paved pathways and can be reserved individually or as a group. The site also offers three covered individual picnic sites. Visitors can explore the preserved ruins of Fort Davidson, view exhibits about the battle and Civil War history in Missouri, and walk the interpretive stations laid out across the battlefield. The site is located near Pilot Knob Mountain and Shepherd Mountain, offering beautiful scenery in one of Missouri's most historic areas.
