About
Wild Boar Campground is located at Council Bluff Recreation Area on the shores of the largest lake in Mark Twain National Forest. The 440-acre Council Bluff Lake, created by a dam across Big River, reaches depths of 87 feet and offers excellent opportunities for fishing, no-wake boating, and swimming. The campground features 55 sites including 39 single sites, 7 double sites, 9 walk-in tent sites, and 4 group sites that accommodate up to 50 people each. Sites are screened with trees and brush for privacy, and each includes a picnic table, fire ring, and lantern post. The recreation area is spread out, with Chapel Hill Beach located about a mile from the campground via a downhill hike. The 1.25-acre sandy beach offers a concession stand and coin-operated hot showers. The 12-mile Council Bluff Trail encircles the lake with spurs to the campground, providing scenic lake views and wildlife viewing opportunities. The trail connects to the Ozark Trail at Trace Creek. Anglers can fish year-round for bass, bluegill, catfish, and crappie. Two boat ramps provide water access, though boats must operate at no-wake speeds or use motors limited to 10 horsepower.
Directions
From Potosi, go south 10 miles on Highway 21. Turn right onto Highway C and go approximately 6 miles. Turn left on Highway DD for about 8 miles to the entrance on the left for Council Bluff Recreation Area. Use GPS coordinates 37.72261, -90.937792 and search for Council Bluff Campground, not just Council Bluff, to avoid being routed to the rough north side of the lake.
