Jefferson Hunt Campground
Permanently closed. Jefferson Hunt Campground has been decommissioned by the Forest Service. A closure order is in effect through December 31, 2026 while crews remove infrastructure. All entry is prohibited.
About
Jefferson Hunt Campground, once located on the south shore of Pineview Reservoir near Huntsville, Utah, has been permanently decommissioned by the Uinta-Wasatch-Cache National Forest. The Forest Service made the decision to remove the campground in July 2018 to restore the surrounding wetland areas to a more natural state, allowing waters to flow into natural channels and floodplains along the South Fork Ogden River. Before its closure, the campground offered 29 first-come, first-served sites nestled among tall cottonwoods with vault toilets, drinking water, and fire rings. The area was known for its lush riparian setting along the river. A closure order is in effect through December 31, 2026 while crews complete decommissioning work. All entry to the campground area, including Jefferson Hunt Campground Road (FSR 20089) and Winter's Grove Nature Trail (FST 6616), is prohibited. Campers seeking similar experiences should look to nearby alternatives such as Anderson Cove Campground on Pineview Reservoir.
Directions
The former campground was located approximately 8 miles east of Ogden, Utah, on the south shore of Pineview Reservoir along the South Fork Ogden River. Access was via Forest Service Road 20089 off Highway 39.
