About
Indian Creek Guard Station is a historic cabin built by the Civilian Conservation Corps in the 1930s and used by generations of forest rangers serving the Manti-La Sal National Forest back country. Located at 9,400 feet elevation next to Ferron Reservoir, just below the Wasatch Plateau, the guard station sits facing the reservoir with partial lake views through mature stands of Engelmann spruce, fir, and aspen trees. The cabin accommodates up to 10 people total: six inside on single bunks with mattresses, and four additional guests in tents outside. RVs are not allowed. The kitchen is equipped with a table and chairs, sink, wood stove, propane lighting, and propane appliances including a stove, oven, and hot water heater. Limited utensils and cookware are provided. The cabin is solar-powered for lights and phone charging. Seasonal amenities vary significantly. From July through mid-September, indoor plumbing includes drinking water from a hand pump, a flush toilet, and a shower. From mid-September through March, guests must bring their own water and use the vault toilet located 50 feet from the cabin. Firewood is supplied December through March. This is a pack-in, pack-out facility. Access is by vehicle in summer, but after September, snow may make the cabin inaccessible except by snowmobile. The nearby Ferron Reservoir offers fishing for rainbow and cutthroat trout, plus small craft boating and canoeing. The expansive Arapeen ATV Trail System with over 350 miles of trails is accessible nearby, and winter brings excellent snowmobiling, cross-country skiing, and snowshoeing. Skyline Drive runs along the plateau top above, offering scenic mountain views.
Directions
From Ferron, head west on West Canyon Road for about 27 miles to Ferron Reservoir. The pavement ends near the forest boundary. At the reservoir, go left around it and look for the guard station sign. From Mayfield, head east through Twelve Mile Canyon on Forest Road 022. Near the plateau top, turn left across from Twelve Mile Flat Campground, continue on FR 022 over the plateau and down about 3 miles. The guard station is on the left before the reservoir.
