About

Hunters Spring Cabin provides a serene mountain escape in the Little Belt Mountains of central Montana at an elevation of 6,400 feet near Whitetail Creek. The rustic two-story frame house sleeps up to eight guests in three roomy bedrooms and is secured with a combination lock. The kitchen is outfitted with a propane cook stove, refrigerator, cooking pots, pans, dishes, and utensils. The dining room has a table and chairs, and a wood stove provides heat. Limited firewood is provided. The cabin has no water, electricity, or sewer. Guests must bring drinking water, bedding, food, warm clothing, toilet paper, flashlights, matches, cleaning supplies, and garbage bags. A vault toilet is available outside. The surrounding forest of lodgepole pine and Douglas fir is home to deer and elk. Mandatory food storage is required due to bears in the area. Summer access is via gravel Forest Road 274 to Forest Road 6429. The road gate uses the same combination as the cabin. Winter access from December 1 through generally mid-April is by snowmobile, skis, or snowshoes only as the road is not plowed. The cabin is located about an hour's drive from Harlowton and White Sulphur Springs.

Directions

From the south: From Highway 12 take Forest Road 274 north for approximately 11 miles to Forest Road 6429, turn right just past Whitetail Campground. Go approximately 0.5 miles on Road 6429 to the Hunters Spring Cabin turnoff on the right. From the north: From Utica take County Road 1 west about 13 miles to the junction. Go straight or left toward South Fork Judith Forest Road 487, follow to the Spring Creek junction. Turn left onto Spring Creek Road 274, follow to Bear Park Road 6429. Turn left to the cabin gate on the right. Winter: Park at mile marker 7 on Forest Road 274 and travel 6 miles by snowmobile or skis.
