Hay Canyon Campground

Open — Open year-round, 24 hours a day. First-come, first-served with no reservations. Limited to 16-day stays.

About

Hay Canyon Campground is situated in the Lewis and Clark National Forest within the Little Belt Mountains, offering 7 campsites in a remote setting along the South Fork of the Judith River. The campground serves as a base for anglers targeting trout in the river and ATV enthusiasts exploring the scenic trails throughout the area. Vault toilets are provided, but no drinking water is available on-site, so campers must bring their own supply. The campground is accessed via a 17-mile gravel road from Utica, following Montana Highway 239 from Hobson on US Highway 87. The maximum recommended trailer length is 30 feet, and stays are limited to 16 days. Due to bear activity in the area, mandatory food storage is required, and all food must be kept in approved containers and removed from the area after eating. With light usage and a primitive setting, Hay Canyon Campground appeals to campers seeking a rustic experience in Montana's national forest. The area combines fishing opportunities, motorized trail access, and the natural beauty of the Little Belt Mountains, making it suitable for self-sufficient campers comfortable with backcountry conditions.

Directions

At Hobson on US Highway 87, turn into town and follow Montana Highway 239 to Utica. At Utica, turn left onto county road (gravel). Travel 17 miles southwest to campground.
