DRY WOLF GROUP CAMP
The campground typically opens in June and remains open through mid-fall, with exact dates varying based on snowfall and road conditions. Individual sites are first-come, first-served; group camping requires advance reservation through the Judith Ranger District office. A food storage order is in effect March 1 through December 1.
About
Dry Wolf Group Camp sits in a scenic valley along Dry Wolf Creek within the Helena-Lewis and Clark National Forest, roughly 20 miles southwest of Stanford, Montana. The campground features 25 campsites spread through meadows and conifer forest at approximately 5,900 feet elevation. Bandbox Mountain rises nearby, where marine fossils can be found as evidence of the ancient sea that once covered this region. The campground provides vault toilets with at least one ADA-accessible facility, and potable water is available during warmer months. Each site includes a fire ring or grill and picnic table. The largest site can accommodate trailers up to 45 feet. Individual sites are first-come, first-served at $15 per night, while group camping arrangements require advance coordination with the Judith Ranger District. Access requires navigating approximately 20 miles of gravel and dirt roads from Stanford, with the final 8 miles on a single-lane road. The remote location offers solitude and access to surrounding trails and dispersed recreation in the Little Belt Mountains.
Directions
From Stanford, take US Highway 87 north 1.2 miles to the Forest Access sign. Turn left and go 4.3 miles to a Y intersection. Bear right and continue 15.7 miles to the campground sign, then turn right into the campground. All but the first mile is gravel and dirt, with the last 8 miles on a single-lane road.
