About
Horseshoe Recreation Area is a historic 21-site campground constructed by the Civilian Conservation Corps in the 1930s, located approximately 7 miles northeast of St. George, West Virginia. Nestled in a valley along Horseshoe Run within the Monongahela National Forest, the campground provides a mix of electric and primitive camping options. Sites 1 through 13 offer electric hookups with 15/30/50 amp service, while sites 14 through 18 are primitive, and sites 19 through 21 are walk-in tent sites. Sites 7 through 12 are reservable through Recreation.gov up to 2 days in advance; all other sites operate first-come, first-served. The campground features four flush restrooms with sinks that are handicap accessible, potable water from spigots and hand pumps, fire rings, and picnic tables at every site. The area offers excellent trout fishing in Horseshoe Run and access to several day hiking trails including the 1.8-mile Losh Trail, 1.3-mile Dorman Ridge Trail, and sections of the Allegheny Trail. Hunting is permitted in an area about a mile beyond the recreation area. Two picnic pavilions are available for group rental.
