Red Creek Campground
Open April through December. First-come, first-served; no reservations. No potable water or restrooms available. Maximum stay is 14 days.
About
Red Creek Campground sits atop the Allegheny Plateau within the Dolly Sods Scenic Area, approximately 20 miles northwest of Petersburg, West Virginia. The high elevation creates a microclimate with vegetation more typical of Northern Canada than Appalachia, including sphagnum bogs, stunted red spruce, and expansive heath barrens. Flowering laurel, rhododendron, and azaleas bloom from May through June, while huckleberry picking draws visitors in July. Bird banding occurs in late summer and fall. The campground provides immediate access to Dolly Sods Wilderness, one of the most distinctive hiking destinations in the eastern United States. This is a primitive facility with no potable water or restrooms; campers should arrive fully self-sufficient. The maximum stay is 14 days, and no camping is allowed within 300 feet of Forest Road 75 unless within the designated campground. Stock animals are not permitted.
