About
Horse Campground is situated on the eastern shore of Little Grass Valley Reservoir in the Northern Sierra Nevada Mountains at an elevation of 5,060 feet. As the only campground in the Little Grass Valley area equipped for equestrian camping, it serves as a hub for horseback riders exploring the region's extensive trail system. The campground offers 10 single-family equestrian campsites with hitching posts, lantern posts, picnic tables, and fire rings with grills. The 1,615-acre Little Grass Valley Reservoir, formed by flooding in the 1960s, provides excellent opportunities for fishing (trout and kokanee salmon), swimming, boating, and water skiing. The Lakeshore Trail loops 14.5 miles around the lake and is open to hiking, mountain biking, and horseback riding. This trail connects to the Pacific Crest National Scenic Trail, offering access to one of America's premier long-distance trails. The campground is surrounded by thick stands of pine and fir trees, creating a scenic mountain setting. Facilities include accessible vault toilets, hand-pumped water, and seasonal trash service. An on-site campground host may be available during the operating season. The area is popular for snowmobiling during winter months when the campground is closed.
