The Gros Ventre Campground is situated in a tranquil setting with incredible views of Blacktail Butte and the Grand Teton Mountain Range. Within walking distance is the Gros Ventre River, which runs through forests, cliffs, and narrow canyons. This area is known for its remarkable fly fishing and photography opportunities.

Gros Ventre Campground

Closed — Closed for the winter season. Opens April 26, 2025 and operates through early October. Reservations available up to six months in advance via Recreation.gov.

Antler Collection Not Permitted Inside Park Boundaries

Elk are shedding their antlers in and around Grand Teton. People visiting or passing through the park must note that it's illegal to take, collect, retrieve, possess, or transport any natural product, including shed antlers, from the park at any time.

Menors Ferry Road Closure

Menors Ferry Road will be closed 7/26/2025 for a special event. Access to the Chapel of the Transfiguration will be walk-in only. Parking is available at Windy Point or Craig Thomas Discovery and Visitor Center.

Fire restrictions in place

Stage 1 fire restrictions are in place. Campfires are only allowed in designated metal fire grates. Teton Interagency Fire has more information.

Gros Ventre Campground, meaning 'big belly' in French, is Grand Teton National Park's largest campground, featuring 279 individual sites, 39 electric hookup sites, and 4 group sites. Surrounded by cottonwood trees and sagebrush, the campground sits along the Gros Ventre River with stunning views of Blacktail Butte and the Teton Mountains. The riverside location provides prime wildlife watching opportunities, as bison, moose, mule deer, and a variety of birds frequently visit the area. All campsites include a picnic table, fire grate, and bear box, with nearby flush toilets and cold running water. The campground accommodates both tent campers and RVs up to 45 feet in length, with some sites offering electric hookups. Two dump stations are available with limited hours. The Gros Ventre River offers excellent fly fishing for cutthroat trout, brook trout, and whitefish, all within walking distance from any campsite. The area offers outstanding recreation opportunities including the 7.3-mile Blacktail Butte Trail with wildflowers and panoramic mountain views, sport climbing on Blacktail Butte's limestone walls, and easy access to iconic sites like Mormon Row. The campground is the closest park campground to Jackson, just 7 miles south, providing convenient access to town amenities while maintaining a tranquil natural setting.

Directions

From Jackson: Drive north on US 26/89/191 for 7 miles. Turn right at Gros Ventre Junction onto Gros Ventre River Road. Continue northeast 4.5 miles to the campground sign and turn right. From Moose Junction: Drive south on US 26/89/191 for 5.5 miles. Turn left at Gros Ventre Junction onto Gros Ventre River Road. Continue northeast 4.5 miles to the campground sign and turn right.

The campground’s location next to the Gros Ventre River offers some of the best opportunities in the park for wildlife sightings, as bison, moose, mule deer and a wide variety of birds are known to frequent the area. For avid anglers, the Gros Ventre River offers plentiful cutthroat trout, brook trout, and whitefish. While none of Gros Ventre’s campsites are on the river, all are within walking distance.
The Gros Ventre area is a prime location for wildlife watching and photography. Walk along the banks of the river under cottonwood trees and willows to capture that perfect photo of a beaver, moose, elk, bison, or bears. (Be sure to maintain appropriate distance!) Located a short drive away is Mormon Row, featuring the iconic and historic John Moulton barn.
