About

Built in 1909, the Gotchen Creek Guard Station is the oldest historic structure in Gifford Pinchot National Forest and the only building constructed during the administration of Gifford Pinchot, the first Chief of the U.S. Forest Service. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2007. The cabin sleeps up to 6 people in double bunk beds split between the main room and a separate bunkhouse. Amenities include propane heat (disabled during July and August), a propane stove, propane refrigerator, pots, pans, dishes, cooking utensils, and two battery-operated lanterns. A vault toilet is located approximately 20 yards from the cabin. There is no potable water, electricity, or running water on site. The guard station sits near the base of Mt. Adams at 12,276 feet, offering access to hiking, biking, horseback riding, hunting, skiing, and snowshoeing. Winter access depends on snow levels and may require skis, snowmobile, or snowshoes from Pineside or Snow King Sno-Parks.

Directions

From Trout Lake, WA, head toward Pineside Sno-Park on Mt. Adams Recreation Highway. Take Forest Road 8225 to the junction with Forest Road 8225060. The cabin is 150 yards on the left. In winter, access from Snow King Sno-Park is 3.5 miles via Lava Loop/Pipeline Loop to FS 181 to FS 8225, or 3.4 miles uphill from Pineside Sno-Park on FS 8225.
