About
Foxtail Group Picnic Area is a day-use facility located in the Spring Mountains National Recreation Area on the Humboldt-Toiyabe National Forest, approximately 47 miles from downtown Las Vegas. The site sits among a forest of towering ponderosa pines that provide shade from the desert sun. Seven group sites are available for reservation, each equipped with picnic and serving tables, grills, and campfire circles. The two largest sites include pavilions and fireplaces. The Spring Mountains are a true desert oasis, home to the ancient bristlecone pine and the rare Mount Charleston blue butterfly. More than 100 springs create the namesake for this mountain range. Popular nearby activities include hiking and mountain biking on the 1.3-mile Sawmill Trail and 6.2-mile Bristlecone Trail. This is a day-use facility only with no overnight camping allowed. Summer hours are 10:00 AM to 5:00 PM with gates locked outside these times. In winter, when at least 12 inches of snow is present, the area opens for sledding and tubing on holidays and weekends.
Directions
From Las Vegas, take Highway 95 north to the junction with Highway 156/Lee Canyon. Turn left and travel approximately 19 miles to the picnic area on the left.
