Closed — Currently closed for winter season. The facility operates seasonally for group picnic reservations during summer months and reopens for winter snowplay when at least 12 inches of snow accumulates. Winter snowplay may be available on a first-come, first-served basis with per-vehicle fees.

Located just 47 miles from downtown Las Vegas in the Spring Mountains National Recreation Area, Foxtail Group Picnic Area serves as a forested desert oasis with dual seasonal purposes. During the summer season, the facility operates as a group picnic area with seven reservable sites, each equipped with picnic and serving tables, grills, and campfire circles. The two largest sites include pavilions and fireplaces. Flush toilets and drinking water are provided during summer operations. When winter brings at least 12 inches of snow to the area, Foxtail transforms into a popular snowplay destination where visitors can enjoy sledding and tubing. Winter operations feature a self-pay station, usable fire rings, and restroom facilities. The picnic area is set among towering ponderosa pines with views of the surrounding Spring Mountains. Nearby recreation includes the 1.3-mile Sawmill Trail and 6.2-mile Bristlecone Trail, both accessible just a short drive away. The Spring Mountains National Recreation Area features more than 60 miles of trails for hiking and horseback riding, with select trails allowing mountain biking. Parking is limited at the facility, so carpooling is recommended. Additional parking is available at area lots at the bottom of the mountain or at the meadows approximately a quarter mile above Foxtail. This is a day-use only facility; no overnight camping is permitted.

Directions

From Las Vegas, take Highway 95 north to the junction with Highway 156 (Lee Canyon Road), turn left and travel approximately 19 miles to the picnic area on the left.
