Fox Creek Horse Camp

Closed — Closed for the season. The campground operates from early April through late November. Reservations available via Recreation.gov.

Special Weather Statement issued April 12 at 2:03PM EDT by NWS Blacksburg VA

2:03 PM — April 13th, 1:00 AM

The combination of 10 hour fuel moistures around 7 to 10 percent, relative humidities around 25 to 30 percent, and wind gusts around 20 to 25 mph will lead to an increased risk for the rapid spread of wildfires on Monday. Residents and visitors are urged to properly dispose of cigarette butts, matches, and any other flammable items in appropriate containers. Additionally, exercise caution if operating any equipment that could create sparks and keep vehicles off of dry grass. Most dry grasses, dead leaves, and other tree litter could easily ignite and spread fire quickly. Lastly, remember to obey local burn bans. For more information about wildfire danger, burn restrictions, and wildfire prevention and education, please visit your state forestry or environmental protection website. About

Fox Creek Horse Camp offers horseback riders unparalleled access to some of the most scenic trail riding in the eastern United States. Situated at approximately 4,000 feet elevation in the Mount Rogers National Recreation Area, this specialized equestrian campground provides the rare opportunity to ride directly from your campsite onto hundreds of miles of trails through the spectacular Mount Rogers High Country. The campground is set in open fields on either side of Fox Creek, a small rocky trout stream bordered by large boulders, rhododendron, and northern hardwoods. Sites include hitching posts for horses, and the creek provides water for animals. The high elevation location offers a welcome summer retreat with expansive views, opportunities for blueberry picking, and spectacular fall colors. Trail access includes the Virginia Highlands Horse Trail, Iron Mountain Trail, and routes to the open mountain balds and spruce-fir forests of the Mount Rogers High Country. Horse owners must have a current negative Coggins test certificate for any horse brought to the campground, as required by Virginia law. The campground is primitive with portable toilets and no potable water available. The Mount Rogers National Recreation Area Headquarters and Pat Jennings Visitors Center in Marion offers maps, directions, and additional information about the area's extensive trail system.
